I've been reading a book about the Beatles by Bob Spitz. He worked tirelessly interviewing many people who had never been interviewed before. The picture of the Beatles---Beatlemania, the relationship with Brian Epstein, the feud between John and Paul---it makes for some pretty interesting reading.
John Lennon, in particular, comes off as a more complex character than the saint he later became.
First, the background on Liverpool. Those of us who grew up with the Beatles recognize how important it was and fail to see it the way people in London saw it: a backwater, desolate Siberia. The people there called themselves 'Scousers' and keenly felt the prejudice toward them.
There wasn't much to do, so kids would form skiffle bands and compete with other boys from the neighborhood. There wasn't good radio reception, but the boys had begun to hear the beginnings of rock n roll coming over the ocean, and heard through the static on their radio.

Living is easy with eyes closed
Living is easy with eyes closed/ misunderstanding all you see/ It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out/ it doesn't matter much to me.
no one I think is in my tree/ I mean it must be high or low/ that is you can't you know tune in you know but it's alright that is I think it's not too bad. Always know sometimes think it's me/ but you know I know and it's a dream/ I think I know I mean oh yes but it's all wrong/ that is I think I disagree.
